You want a Maine Coon, but how in the world do you pick your breeder?
I think we can all agree, its easy to fall in love with a cute kitten, but how do you know your picking the right one?

I'm sure you know, buying a kitten isn't like shopping at Costco or Build A Bear.
Kittens are animals with a mind all of their own, and they have their own health needs.
So how do you choose?
It's so daunting to try to find a breeder you trust and want work with.

Basic Checklist
1. Does the breeder do all the pertinant health testing?
FIRST THIS
2. Will they Facetime with you, showing the kitten, parents, and the breeders face?
THEN THIS
3. Does the breeder have a good reputation?
THEN THIS
If you see a Maine Coon kitten for less than $1,200, it's probably a scam.
In North America, Maine Coon kittens are generally in the $2,000 - $5,500 price range.
If you see a website with a "buy now" option for a $500 Maine Coon, it's most likely a scam.
How to avoid the scams>

Ask to facetime and see the kitten(s) and the breeder.

You like the general vibe from the breeder. While you aren't marrying the breeder, it may give some peace of mind if you generally like them.
They are willing
They are willing to share parents health tests. It is reasonable to ask to see test results if you are serious about a particular kitten.
They respond
While it's hard to respond to every single message instantly, a good breeder will respond to messages in a reasonable time frame.
They want to get to know you
A responsible breeder NEEDS to know what kind of person you are and what kind of home you are offering their kitten. If a breeder turns you down for whatever reason, be it timing, financials, or lifestyle, just know they are trying to do right by their kitten.
