It’s 6 AM, I’m dodging a polydactyl paw swiping at my coffee, and somewhere in the house, a Maine Coon is plotting to “reorganize” the paintings hanging on my wall.
Welcome to life at Top Shelf Maine Coons, where these gentle giants keep our busy family on our toes.
If you’re thinking about adding a Maine Coon to your crew, buckle up, because they’re a unique breed. Here are five things I wish I’d known before diving head-first into the world of fluffy chaos.
1. They’re Furry Toddlers, Forever
Maine Coons aren’t just big (think 15–25 pounds of pure fluff)… they act like eternal kittens.
My high black smoke female, Elsa, still pounces on any string like material the kids drag round for her, like its her life calling.
- They’ll “help” with everything—cooking, Zoom calls, you name it.
- Expect playtime at all ages, even when they’re senior fluffballs.
- Sturdy and huge cat trees are a must. Temu ones become kindling fast…..Ask me how I know 🙂
Top Shelf Tip: Invest in a cat tree that can handle a Maine Coon’s enthusiasm.
We learned the hard way after ours looked like it had been through a terrible divorce within a month. Plus it tipped over under their weight, so that obviously a safety hazard.
2. Grooming Is Your New Hobby
That glorious mane is a showstopper, but it’s also very good at attaching itself to almost every surface in your home……including you!
Daily brushing is non-negotiable (think of it as bonding… with a side of fur missal) Some do shed less than others though. They get extra fluffy for our Alberta winters.
- Start grooming young to make it routine.
- Use a deshedding tool to keep fur under control.
- Be ready for seasonal shedding (hello, spring fluff-pocalypse).
3. Raw Diets Are Worth It… But Messy
Maine Coons thrive on high-protein raw diets—it keeps their joints strong and coats glossy.
Feeding raw has been a game-changer for our cattery, but prepping it? Let’s just say my kitchen’s seen more wild meat than a butcher shop.
Read more on their diet herehttps://topshelfmc.com/2025/08/06/how-to-feed-a-maine-coon-cat-raw-diet-high-protein-hydration-tips/
- Aim for 80 % muscle meat, 10 % bone, 10 % organ.
- Premade raw or a feline nutritionist can ease the learning curve.
- Expect some trial + error (and a few weird smells).
- We currently have grain free high protein food offered 24/7, plus raw or wet food once or twice a day.
4. Water Is Their Playground
Maine Coons are obsessed with water.
Socrates MUST attempt to use me as his personal island anytime I’m in the bathtub. He tries to not get me with his claws, but he usually climbs in and sits on me while his tail bobs around in the water.
Elsa prefers to sit on the edge and supervise ( I much prefer her style) Dasha though could care less.
- Get a heavy, wide-base water fountain to keep them hydrated.
- Place multiple water bowls around the house.
- Watch them “hunt” fountain bubbles—it’s free entertainment.
5. They’ll Steal Your Heart (And Your Bed)
These cats aren’t just pets; they’re family. Their dog-like loyalty and chatty trills brighten even my husband’s post-night-shift fog. Although he could do without Dasha’s massive fluffy tail in his face, she only does that to him though, I find it so entertaining.
- Personal space? Gone. The Lazy Boy recliner is a Maine Coon commune now.
- Their trills and chirps will have you entering into long conversations with them. Elsa has so much to say!
- Be ready for cuddles that melt your heart (and hog the blankets).
- They are expert emotional support while you are on laundry duty. Prepare the lint brush though!
Final Thoughts
Bringing a Maine Coon into your life is like signing up for a furry, lovable adventure.
From their toddler-like antics to their water-splashing obsession, these gentle giants are worth every moment of chaos.
Whether you’re brushing out fur storms or prepping raw meals, the key is preparation, and a sense of humor…..also no need for personal space.
